Evan Notaro,
Stani Schiavone
win Lehigh Valley Junior Medal Play titles
Evan Notaro and Stani Schiavone both saw their big victories today in the 19th annual Lehigh Valley Junior Medal Play Championship as a springboard for future success.
Entering the final round with big leads, Notaro -- a junior at Northampton Area High School -- shot a final round even-par 72 at Whitetail Golf Club in Moore Twp. to capture the boys 14-19 year-old title. Notaro, the reigning District 11 champion, finished with a 36-hole score of 1-under-par 143, ten strokes ahead of recent Freedom graduate Steve Kluemper (78-75--153).
Notaro, who currently leads the 2011 Lehigh Valley Player of the Year points race, used his trademark accuracy off the tee and crisp iron game to coast to victory. He hit 13 greens in regulation, made four birdies and used 32 putts in the final round.
After missing a lot of fairways off the tee in the recent Bethlehem Golf Club Amateur Stroke Play Championship, Notaro made some necessary adjustments to his address at the ball to regain his accurate form.
"I was spraying my drives everywhere at Bethlehem," Notaro said. "The night before the tournament, I fixed it on the range. It was all ball position and my stance, which was too wide. I was giving myself good shots at the green today. One-under par, I'll take that any day."
Notaro will play in next week's American Junior Golf Association tournament inSparta, N.J., then in the Lehigh Valley Open in early August.

Matthews wins PIAA Golf Championship
YORK -- Pittston Area golfer Brandon Matthews claimed the PIAA Golf Championship on Tuesday at Heritage Hills Golf Club.
The Times Leader
The junior won by a commanding three shots by firing a two-day total of 3-under par 139. He carded 67 on Tuesday after a 72 during Monday's first round on the par-71.
Matthews fired seven birdies on the day, including a run on Nos. 10, 11 and 12 to start the back nine after beginning his round with a bogey on No. 1.
"I don't think it's set in yet, but it's getting there," Matthews said about capturing the state title. "To win states, that's all anyone can ask for."
Matthews becomes the first state champion from District 2 since Ted Tryba of Hanover Area shot 73-74--147 at Penn State Blue Course in 1983.
